Smash Bash: Creating a Community around Smash Brothers Brawl
From TechSource Gaming Symposium
Presenters: Alex Byrne, Jami Schwarzwalder (Pierce County Library System)
Description: Smash Brothers Brawl for the Wii is a game that has the potential to be a community building game when your gamers unlock all of the characters, build stages, and play using special Brawl rules. This program will focus on how to engage your teens with this popular game, encouraging and demonstrating new ways to play with the game outside of the tournament structure. We've found some ways to make Smash about more than just beating up other opponents. For example, our teens have been having fun creating new ways to play while we try to fight the 450 brawls required to unlock all the characters. We will share the ways we've been playing, as well as talk about the community that has developed around this game. Come learn about the ways teens adapt games in ways the original creators don't plan for, gain a better understanding about the world natural to gamers, and hear specific ways to improve your teen gaming programs.
